After all marital property and all marital debts have been identified and valued, the result is the “net marital estate”. In North Carolina, the law creates a presumption that the value of the net marital estate will be divided equally. The judge then distributes the various assets and debts to each spouse so that the result is each ends up with 50% of the net value.
